Engineering and Applied Science

The Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science offers a co-op program with world-class companies in the New York metro area to provide students with the opportunity to work as a full time, salaried employee after the fall or spring semester of their junior year in a field related to their major. After the completion of the co-op experience, students return to Hofstra to complete their degree requirements.

Experiential Learning and Field Work

While internships are a critical part of preparing for life after college, it's also important to have facilities on campus that allow students to learn experientially. Check out how the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, one of the nation's largest trading rooms --equipped with 34 Bloomberg terminals -- does just that. See how students in the Drama and Dance Department have the opportunity to apply for Activity Grants, which are applied to tuition and serve as a subsidy to students heavily involved in departmental rehearsal and performance activities that make outside employment inadvisable.

The Center for Civic Engagement has a variety of student internships and classroom activities to learn about community service, activism, advocacy, and civics. See how our cutting-edge NewsHub and our award-winning Radio Hofstra University - WRHU give our students hands-on experience. Check out the variety of TV broadcasts and films The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication students produce in the Student Work section.

Students in the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science get hands-on experience in the school's academic facilities, including a Big Data Lab, Cell and Tissue Engineering Lab, and Ultrasound Research Lab, as well as real-work experience and exposure to industry issues in the Center for Innovation. Our Physician Assistant Studies students intern in a variety of clinical settings. Our Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic provides students with many observation and volunteer opportunities. Students studying geology engage in widespread research projects, and our physics students conduct research through the Center for Condensed Matter Research.

Many of our academic programs in psychology, early education, literacy studies, speech-language-hearing, and marriage and family therapy offer experiential opportunities for students within the renowned Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center, right on campus.

And our Center for Entrepreneurship provides students with the skills and training necessary to become accomplished entrepreneurs.
