Nassau BOCES Outdoor Education Programs 2020

Campers will explore the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve including a fresh water pond, field and forests. You will even explore an estuary by canoe! You’ll learn map reading skills and use of a compass and GPS to aide you in your explorations. Then we will travel to other locations to compare and contrast the ecology of “Wild Long Island!”

Each day will find you “submerged” in activities designed to expand your understanding of Long Island‘s marine ecosystem. Our “home base” will be Caumsett State Historic Park, a wonderful site with a 95-acre salt marsh and over 2 miles of coastline along the north shore of Long Island.

Get your hiking boots ready for this 5-day adventure! Each day will find us exploring a different Long Island site. We will start the week off with a grand tour of the five habitats at Caumsett State Park. The rest of the week will find us at special places like Shu Swamp, Garvies Point, the Brookville Education Center, Tackapausher Museum and Preserve, the Oceanside Marine Center and the Norman J. Levy Park Preserve. Location: BOCES Caumsett and Brookville Environmental Education Centers and other LI locations.

There is a whole world beneath the sea that most land creatures could never know. Campers get your gills ready to take a look under the sea. You will be engaged in hands-on studies of diverse marine habitats. Daily observations and specimen collection will provide a new insight to campers on how the marine world works.

Daily activities have included: Seining, Saltmarsh Hike, Snorkeling, Horseshoe crab and Plankton studies.

*Note: There is a $50 surcharge per two-week session for additional materials and staff requirements

Did you ever dream of being on an expedition with Dr. Robert Ballard? With our new program, students can capture some of this magic right here at home. Students will use Hofstra's top-notch facilities, including their Olympic sized pool, while being taught by experts from Nassau BOCES. Time will be split between the classroom and the pool, where students will design and build a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and learn about methods in underwater archeology. The course will begin with an introduction to the history of marine exploration. Then, as part of a team, they will design and build an underwater ROV and test their designs in the water. Students will also have the opportunity to work with a marine archeologist and participate in an antique "helmet dive" in Hofstra's pool.

Take the Challenge and bring your high energy for an action-packed week! You will develop teambuilding and outdoor skills while you: Activities include:

• Navigate our Low ropes course where you will practice problem solving and leadership skills.
• Traverse our High Elements Ropes Course: whether it is the Giant Swing Shot, Flying Squirrel, Catwalk, or High Multi-Vine (to name a few!), campers will use new skills to support each other and step outside their comfort zone in their rise to the top!
• Learn about survival, building shelters, making fire with a bow and drill, finding your way with map and compass and geocaching with GPS
• Learn canoeing skills

Campers will step back in time by exploring the significance of local history through daily trips. Campers will visit historical sites in the North Shore's Gold Coast and the South Shore of Long Island. Campers will engage in:

• Hand-on-activities.
• Explore scenic attractions and museums.
• Participate in guided tours.
