Hofstra in Spain Program
Granada and Madrid
Summer Session 2, July 6-31, 2019

Program Description

  • Learn about Andalusian Food Culture
  • Learn about flamenco music and dance

The Program begins in Granada, a beautiful and vibrant city located in southern Spain.  During our stay in Spain, classroom teaching is coordinated with day trips, and weekly activities become extraordinary teachable moments.

For example:

  • A guided tour of the Alhambra brings to life the history of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity in Spain and in Europe,
  • In class, students learn about the food culture of Arabs, Sephardi Jews, and Christians during the Middle Ages, and the Columbian Exchange that exported Andalusian cuisine to the Americas and brought new foods from the Americas to Spain. Students visit an Arabic tea house or a traditional food provisions market and engage in hands-on cooking lessons using the ingredients they are studying.
  • After reading about flamenco music, its history, and its relevance in the social fabric of Andalusia and  Spain, students get to experience it in the flesh as they learn basic steps and patterns with a professional dancer.
  • At the end of the program, we spend a few days in Madrid, and we experience its buzzing energy while we take guided walking tours that bring history to life.

While in Granada, students stay with a carefully chosen host family. Living with and sharing daily routine with a host family (and communicating in Spanish) is one of the most rewarding experiences of studying abroad. In fact, this can be the most enriching and lasting aspect of studying in a foreign country.

Program Details


The program is open to both Hofstra and non-Hofstra students.


The program fee of $4,950 covers:

  • Round trip airfare between JFK and Madrid airports, and train or bus to Granada.
  • Comfortable lodging and three meals every day while in Granada throughout the trip.
  • All ground transportation and entrance fees for museums and shows scheduled in the program.
  • Multiple guided tours, excursions, and cultural activities.
  • 24/7 support from on-site staff.
  • Health insurance

In addition to the program fee, students pay standard Hofstra tuition and fees for 3 or 6 semester hours.

Financial aid in the form of student loans is available; interested students should initiate the loan process as early as possible with their university’s financial aid representative.

HCLAS Transformative Learning Grant
HCLAS Hofstra Students interested in studying abroad can apply for the HCLAS Transformative Learning Grant.   To be eligible for an HCLAS Transformative Learning Grant you must meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate student with at least one major in HCLAS
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 from at least one semester at Hofstra
  • Financial need as demonstrated through FAFSA on file at Student Financial Services as of the date of your application
  • Have a qualified project

For an application please visit and click on “Study Abroad Applications” under the “Useful Resources” tab.  Download and complete the Hofstra in Spain application and the four (4) necessary forms.  Bring the completed application, necessary forms and $400 nonrefundable deposit receipt to the Office of Study Abroad Programs, Room 107 Roosevelt Hall, South Campus, by Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Available Courses

At least one (1) of the following courses is required. Students may register for both.
SPAN 120 – Spanish Cultural Studies. (in Spanish, Dr. Anastasio)
GS 104N (IS) / GEOG 104N (BH) – Andalusian Food Culture (in English, Dr. Janer)
These courses are specially designed for the study abroad program in Granada, Spain. Class readings and assignments provide students with an opportunity to make connections between their class readings and discussions, and their daily experiences in the program.

SPAN 120 –In Spanish

Spanish Cultural Studies
From Al-Andalus to the present, the course will look at literature, music, visual arts, and architecture from Andalusia, the southern area of Spain where the program is held. Class readings and discussions will come to life in different activities during the program, including a flamenco workshop, a visit to the interactive Museo de la Memoria, as well as walking tours and guided visits to landmark spaces, including the magnificent Alhambra (in Granada) and Real Alcazar (in Sevilla), both declared World Heritage Sites.  The course provides students with an opportunity to make meaningful connections between the course materials and their daily experiences in the program. Taught in Spanish.

GS 104N (IS)/ GEOG 104N (BH)

Andalusian Food Culture—In English
For centuries, Andalusia has been a global center of cultural fusion and diffusion. In this course, we will retrace the cultural geography and history of contemporary Andalusian cuisine, focusing on three distinct phases: (1) the interactions between the food culture of Arabs, Sephardic Jews and Christians during the Middle Ages, (2) the Columbian Exchange that exported Andalusian cuisine to the Americas and brought new foods from the Americas to Spain, and (3) the ongoing contemporary culinary fusions. The course integrates visits to an Arabic tea house, a meat curing facility in the Sierra Nevada region and a traditional food provisions market, plus food tastings and a practical cooking lesson. Throughout the course students will learn to appreciate the multi-local and multi-cultural historical significance of common foods like olive oil, eggplants, ham, sugar, tomatoes and potatoes. Taught in English.
